When is it Time to Hire a Brand Designer?
At least once a month, someone asks me, “How do I know when it’s time to hire a brand designer?” And I can always hear the real question underneath it. They’re not asking about logos or color palettes. They’re asking if it’s finally time to take themselves seriously.
After a decade of building brands for small business owners, I’ve noticed a pattern. The founders who truly need to DIY don’t question it. They’re in build mode, making things happen with what they have. This is a scrappy and necessary season of business owning and I respect it. But the ones who ask? They’re not beginners. They have clients and they know they’re good at what they do. But their brand hasn’t caught up yet.
DIY is affordable upfront. A template here, a course there, a few long nights in Canva. You can absolutely get something live that works and for a while. But, relying on a DIY brand for years can start to feel tight, costing you positioning and the perfect client who clicks away.
Hiring a professional brand designer is an investment (notice I said investment, not expense). And yes, it requires what could be a big sum of money upfront, but what you’re paying for isn’t decoration. You’re investing in a brand strategy that aligns your business model, dream clients, and visuals with the level you want to operate at. You’re paying for a brand that can hold your growth instead of cracking under it.
A professionally-made brand isn’t just something that looks polished. It positions you properly by supporting your pricing and making you memorable. So when someone asks me whether they should hire a brand designer or keep DIYing, what I really want to know is, “Are you still trying to prove you can run a business, or are you ready to be seen as the one who already does?”
There’s no shame in either season. But if you feel that quiet tension when you look at your website. If you know your work is stronger than your presentation and you’re tired of feeling “almost” there…that’s your answer.
